(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) Senate Republicans blocked a domestic terrorism bill while asserting it would dangerously expand the government’s surveillance powers. On Thursday, the measure failed along party lines. At least 10 Republican votes were needed to advance. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced the bill in response to a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo. It would have created new federal offices to increase focus on domestic terrorism threats in coordination with Homeland Security, the DOJ and the FBI. Republicans have been skeptical of the legislation. They believe the bill could lead to the policing of political speech and claimed it’s an updated version of the  Patriot Act  to surveil Americans. Democrats have tied the issue to firearms and

Newly disclosed documents obtained by the New York Times reveal secret US plans for ‘apocalyptic’ scenarios when a president may activate wartime powers. The documents – known as presidential emergency action documents – were provided to the New York Times by the Brennan Center for Justice after it gathered the materials from the Bush presidential library under the Freedom of Information Act. Only 500 pages were disclosed to the Brennan Center for Justice – 6,000 classified pages were withheld. “The newly disclosed documents show that there were 48 of the directives when the Bush administration took office; by 2008, that number had grown to 56. Vice President Dick Cheney’s office was involved in reviewing and “clearing” the orders. The documents do not indicate any consultation with Congress.” The Times reported. “Several of the files, provided to The New York Times by the Brennan Center for Justice, show that the Bush-era effort partly focused on a law that permits the president to ta

Red Alarm: Israel is Losing Sovereignty over Jerusalem in Fierce Competition

TURKISH FOREIGN Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu visits the compound that houses Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City, Wednesday. (photo credit: AMMAR AWAD/REUTERS) DIPLOMATIC AFFAIRS: There is a lot of competition to hold onto a piece of Jerusalem which is a holy city for multiple religions. The most remarkable aspect of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu’s visit to  al-Aqsa Mosque  compound on the Temple Mount on Tuesday was that it was so unremarkable. Cavusoglu visited the site without Israeli security guards and was accompanied by Azzam al-Khatib, the director-general of the Jordanian-controlled Wakf Muslim religious trust. He was not met on the compound by throngs waving Turkish flags and did not repeat – whether before he went to the site or when he left it – the need for Muslims to “conquer” al-Aqsa by flooding it with visitors. Five years ago Cavusoglu’s boss, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, did just that. Speaking in 2017 at a conference on Jerusalem held in Istanbu

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki, file) Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt (R-Okla.) signed the nation’s strictest abortion bill into law. On Wednesday, Stitt approved the legislation which places a ban on abortions from the point of conception. The law takes effect immediately upon the governor’s signature and prohibits all abortions with few exceptions. Abortion providers have said they will stop performing the procedure as soon as the bill is signed. “I promised Oklahomans that as governor I would sign every piece of pro-life legislation that came across my desk and I am proud to keep that promise today,” the Republican said in a statement. “From the moment life begins at conception is when we have a responsibility as human beings to do everything we can to protect that baby’s life and the life o
