Manchester United add four youngsters to first team squad
Manchester United have officially added young players Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and James Garner to their first team squad.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen for the quarter to be heavily involved in first team matters this coming season, with Greenwood introduced as a substitute in both of United's opening matches.
The four have been regularly training with United's first team squad and have now been included on the 'first team players' section on the official club website.
United have already sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan this summer, with Greenwood promoted to the first team in his stead. And with Alexis Sanchez close to a departure too — possibly joining Lukaku at the San Siro — Dutch winger Chong looks set to get more opportunities.
Gomes emerged in pre-season as an option in the No.10 role after making his United debut three seasons ago under Jose Mourinho as a 16-year-old. Garner's first team bow came against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last season and looks set to provide depth in the central midfield region this term.
Greenwood is in contention to start in this weekend's clash against Palace. The 17-year-old made his competitive United debut in the final game of last season against Cardiff, before impressing in pre-season.
Solskjaer, having previously declared Greenwood is a "player for me", compared the teenager to United legend Ryan Giggs over the summer. The Norwegian decided against sending him out on loan because he thinks he could emulate Giggs' career.
"The kid's only 17 and he's learning every day training with these boys," Solskjaer said. "He's been with us the last few months, he's grown in confidence, he's grown in stature and, as I said before, when you've got players who perform it's difficult to keep them out.
