Democrats set December 6 deadline for White House to say if it will participate in impeachment proceedings

Image
The House Judiciary Committee is setting a deadline of December 6 for President Donald Trump to decide whether his attorneys will participate in  the committee's impeachment proceedings against him. House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat,  sent Trump a letter Friday  with the new date asking if the President's counsel plans to request witnesses or make a presentation as part of the proceedings. That deadline is later than the Sunday one the White House was previously given to say whether it will participate in the committee's first impeachment hearing on Wednesday. The letter to the President and  a separate letter sent to Judiciary Committee ranking Republican Doug Collins  of Georgia were largely technical, referring to the rules established by the House's impeachment resolution last month. But the letter starts the clock for the White House to decide if it will take part in the House's impeachment proceedings -- which Trump and ...

A prosecution witness, Peter Ademola Adegoke, who works as a Compliance Officer with Fidelity Bank Plc, on Friday (today) told Justice Abdullai M. Liman of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, how the sum of N18bn was paid into the account of a company, Ismalob Global Investments, belonging to Ismaila Mustapha, also known as Mompha. Mompha was arraigned on November 25, 2019 on 14 counts bordering on money laundering to the tune of N33bn. The EFCC made this known on Friday in a series of tweets via its verified Twitter handle @officialEFCC. Continuing, EFCC states, “At today’s sitting, the first prosecution witness, PW1, Anne Nnenna Ezekannagha, a manager in the Customer Service Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria, told the court that Mompha’s company, Ismalob Ventures, was not registered with the CBN. “She also revealed that he (Mompha) did not have the license to operate as a Bureau de Change operator.” Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Rot...

Eyes Wide Shut review – chilling secrecy, quaintly soft-porn sex

Image
Near the knuckle? Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman divorced two years after Eyes Wide Shut was released. Photograph: Allstar/Warner Bros E yes Wide Shut, now on rerelease, is fascinating, flawed late  Stanley Kubrick , his final film before his death in 1999 at the age of 70. It was adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s Traumnovelle, or Dream Story, published in 1926 and originally set in Vienna. The film is a tale of sexual obsession among modern-day Manhattan’s wealthy and powerful classes and  I originally valued it for its satirical potency, formal control and dreamlike self-possession , all of which are bound up in a certain kind of deadpan absurdity and soft-porn seriousness. Tom Cruise  plays Bill Harford, a well-off New York doctor with a fashionable clientele and a magnificent apartment in Central Park West, happily married to beautiful Alice (Nicole Kidman) a former art gallery director, now a stay-at-home mum to their young daughter. (In the book, they are...

Image
A Republican candidate running to challenge  Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar  of Minnesota had her Twitter account permanently suspended for repeated violations of Twitter rules, according to a Twitter spokesperson. Danielle Stella says she was banned for a tweet in which she spread a baseless claim about Omar and said if the claim is true, Omar should be tried for treason and hanged, according to a  post  to her Facebook account. Two Twitter accounts of Stella's have been suspended, her campaign confirmed to CNN. Omar has been a frequent  target of smears and attacks  by President Donald Trump and his supporters. In April, Omar said she experienced an increase in  death threats  after Trump tweeted about a speech she had given the month before. "This just shows how far the Republican Party has fallen under Trump. Their campaign strategy is just threats, disinformation and smears against their opponents and the people will continue to rejec...
