The new movie, which the singer, aka Queen Bey, is calling a "visual album" celebrates the journeys of blacks throughout the ages and tells "a tale about a young king's transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity," according to a Disney press release.
Beyonce wrote in an Instagram post featuring highlights from the film that it "is a labor of love. It is my passion project that I have been filming, researching and editing day and night for the past year. I’ve given it my all and now it’s yours... [It's] meant to celebrate the breadth and beauty of Black ancestry. I could never have imagined that a year later, all the hard work that went into this production would serve a greater purpose. The events of 2020 have made the film’s vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey."
In a shot from the film, she appears in an elaborate white wedding gown by Livne, a designer whose creations she has worn in the past. Livne has designed dresses for Beyonce several times, including the red "Freakum" dress she wore on her Mrs. Carter World Tour in 2013.
But Livne isn't the only Israeli designer Beyonce supports. In 2018, she wore a nude-colored tulle gown by Shahar Avnet in London with her husband Jay-Z. Inbal Dror created several custom-made looks for Beyonce's World Formation tour, and Galia Lahav had the honor of designing the wedding gown in which Beyonce and Jay-Z renewed their vows.
Black is King will begin streaming on Disney+ on July 31.
