California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is in quarantine after a member of his staff tested positive for COVID-19. In a statement Monday, a spokesperson confirmed the case.

Newsom tested negative, but will isolate out of an abundance of caution. This comes as the Democrat lawmaker has faced backlash after photos surfaced showing him defying lockdown orders at a dinner party last month.

Just last week, he touted the adherence to social distancing guidelines in various areas, including the state’s capital.

“It’s right in front of us, but it’s also inside us. It’s our decisions, again, not just conditions that will determine that fate and future,” Newsom stated. “And so, we are encouraging that with the stay-at-home order and we put that into place based on ICU capacity.”

The governor’s quarantine will last 10 days and the state’s Health Department has begun contact tracing efforts.
