Joe Biden to be Replaced in SNL
"Saturday Night Live" revealed cast member Alex Moffat as its new Joe Biden impersonator following Jim Carrey's departure. The comedian said on Saturday that he would be retiring from his stint as the president-elect after six appearances.
"Though my term was only meant to be 6 weeks, I was thrilled to be elected as your SNL President...comedy’s highest call of duty," Carrey tweeted. "I would love to go forward knowing that Biden was the victor because I nailed that s---. But I am just one in a long line of proud, fighting SNL Bidens!"
Hours later "SNL" unveiled Carrey's replacement during its cold opening. In the sketch, Moffat hobbles onto the stage wearing a medical boot and leaning on a cane, which he then throws away before performing a somersault.
"You look different," Beck Bennett, who plays Vice President Mike Pence, says.
"I’m like Colonel Sanders, every time you see me I’m a different guy," Moffat replies. "There’s a good chance this time next year I’m going to be Mario Lopez."
Moffat is no stranger to playing the roles of prominent figures in "SNL." He has done impersonations of Eric Trump, Mark Zuckerberg, and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, according to Fox News. He now joins a long line of Biden impersonators that includes Woody Harrelson, Jason Sudeikis, and John Mulaney. Carrey signed on in September, after holding discussions with "SNL" execs.
"There was some interest on his part, and then we responded, obviously, positively, but it came down to discussions about what the take was," Lorne Michaels said in September.
