One of Seattle’s fiercest advocates for defunding the police was forced to defend her policies after calling 9-1-1 to report an incident at her home.

According to a recently redacted police report, city councilwoman Lisa Herbold called the police earlier this month to report that someone had thrown a rock through her living room window. She claimed that she was near her kitchen when she heard a noise, which she referred to as a “gunshot.” She said that this noise forced her to “dive into the kitchen for cover.”

This incident comes as the city council moves to pass legislation effectively making misdemeanors, like throwing a rock through a window, legal if the suspect can employ the so-called poverty defense.

The poverty defense gives considerations to criminals if they claim their mental illness, drug use or financial status had an impact on their decision to commit a crime.

If the new policy were to be enacted, the incident that Herbold reported could be promptly dismissed by a judge.

Herbold claimed her office has received a number of threats this past year amid the reform efforts, but admitted it was unlikely this incident was related.
