House Minority Leader McCarthy to Meet With Trump in Florida
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., reportedly will travel to Florida this week to meet with former President Donald Trump.
The meeting, first reported by Punchbowl News, was confirmed by a source to The Hill.
The leader's office had not responded to a request for comment about the report.
McCarthy will head to Palm Beach, Fla., at a time when he's trying to manage simmering tensions within the House GOP caucus amid the fallout from the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot, and Trump's impeachment for inciting the mob that stormed the building.
The House GOP leader was extremely loyal to the former president during Trump's four years in office. However, he apparently upset the president with words and actions following the Capitol riot.
Angered by McCarthy's comments in recent weeks, Trump reportedly has discussed the possibility of backing a primary challenge to the minority leader.
Although he did not object to Electoral College voting results, McCarthy later said Trump bore some responsibility for the Capitol violence.
The House minority leader, in a private phone call, told Trump left-wing protesters were not to blame for the violence, something the former president and some allies claimed.
McCarthy was not among 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump earlier this month. However, he also did not actively urge caucus members to oppose the vote.
McCarthy has criticized President Joe Biden for his slew of executive orders and policy proposals that looked to derail the Keystone XL pipeline, offer amnesty to 11 million illegal aliens and rejoin the Paris Agreement on global warming.
