McCarthy Urges Amerians to Stand to the Taliban
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) called for bipartisanship as the crisis in Afghanistan continues. During a press conference on Tuesday, he said his concern is centered around keeping troops in region until all Americans are evacuated. He also believes Joe Biden’s end-of-the-month deadline for pulling out all U.S. personnel from the country is unrealistic.
“There’s no possible way that we can get every American that is still in Afghanistan out in the next seven days,” McCarthy explained. “We are just three weeks away from the 20th anniversary of 9/11. At no time should America ever bend or allow the Taliban to tell us when we have to stop bringing Americans out. We should stay until every single American is able to get out of Afghanistan.”
The Republican went on to blast Democrats for not being more involved in helping solve the crisis.
“As I watch other countries and our allies across this world bring their bodies back together of government to work on how to bring their citizens home, the Democrats bring us back to spend trillions of dollars,” he stated. “They fight because they can’t bring a rule up. They spend their time on phones trying to twist arms to get people to vote, whereas they should drop that. And our entire focus — Republican, Democrat, independent alike — should be nothing else than bringing our Americans home.”
McCarthy then said Republican’s are focused on ensuring the safety of every American in Afghanistan.
“The only thing the Republicans are focused on right now is getting every American out and keeping every promise we made,” he continued. “…We will hold people accountable. For the mistakes that were made, the plans that were carried through now. Why weren’t they changed? This tarnishes the reputation of America for decades to come and people should be held accountable.”
This comes as Biden has reportedly said he’s planning on keeping the August 31 deadline due to potential threats from the Taliban.
