Also, Alero Ayida-Otobo, Vice Chancellor of the school, challenged the graduands towards having an unquenchable thirst to raise standards while kicking injustice, religious intolerance and lawlessness out of the country. Some of the graduands who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the ceremony, said they are ready to be the change the country needs to translate to the country’s development. Adedeji Ademefun, one of the graduands, said there is the need to have a new Nigeria that everyone, regardless of tribe and religion, would benefit from. “The SPPG has built a new crop of leaders that are ready to take over the governance space and contribute to the developmental requisite of our country. “My spur is to contribute my quota to ensure that whatever capacity we find ourselves within the governance space, we are able to make impact and really get the dividend of democracy to the people,” he said. We need new ‘liberation movement’ in Nigeria — Soludo

Image
Charles Soludo [PHOTO CREDIT: @ProfCharlesSoludo] “Politics has become big business. Appointment or election into public office is seen largely as an opportunity to ‘eat’ rather than a call to selfless service,” Mr Soludo said. The Anambra State Governor-Elect, Chukwuma Soludo, has called for a new liberation movement in Africa and Nigeria as a country, that would promote the selfless service of political leaders. Mr Soludo was speaking at the 2021 Pioneer Class Graduation Ceremony of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG) in Abuja on Saturday with the theme: ” Emergence of the Unconventionals”. He said that the liberation struggle for independent Africa was driven by a nationalist ideology anchored by a developmental state. According to him, “there is almost a sense of nostalgia, recalling the mission and accomplishments of our founding fathers, especially as we contemplate the world without oil. “Much of the existing social order is founded on competition for, and distr...

A combination image shows what appears to be a Hwasong-12 "intermediate and long-range ballistic missile" test, that state media KCNA says was carried out on Sunday, along with pictures reportedly taken from outer space with a camera at the warhead of the missle, in this image released on January 31, 2022. KCNA via REUTERS North Korea on Monday confirmed it had launched a Hwasong-12 ballistic missile, the same weapon it once threatened to target the U.S. territory of Guam with “enveloping fire,” sparking fears the nuclear-armed state could resume long-range testing. The launch of the intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) was first reported by South Korean and Japanese authorities on Sunday. It was the seventh test conducted by North Korea this month and the first time a nuclear-capable missile of that size has been launched since 2017. The United States is concerned North Korea’s escalating missile tests could be precursors to resumed tests of nuclear weapons and interc...

Afghans walk past a Humvee with a Taliban fighter on it guarding the road in Kabul, Afghanistan, January 27, 2022. REUTERS/Ali Khara A U.N. report seen by Reuters says the Taliban and its allies are believed to have killed scores of former Afghan officials, security force members and people who worked with the international military contingent since the U.S.-led pullout. U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ report to the U.N. Security Council paints a picture of worsening living conditions for Afghanistan’s 39 million people despite an end of combat with the Taliban’s takeover in August. “An entire complex social and economic system is shutting down,” Guterres said. The report sounds the latest in a series of warnings the U.N. chief has issued in recent months about the humanitarian and economic crises that accelerated after the Taliban seized Kabul as the last U.S.-led foreign troops left and international donors cut critical financial aid. Guterres recommended the council approve...

Image
The Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. warned on Sunday that Russia would not stop if it decides to invade its western neighbor. While appearing on CBS's "Face the Nation," Oksana Markarova noted Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. "The reason why Putin attacked us is not because he wants Ukraine, or only Ukraine. The reason he attacked us is because we have chosen to be a democracy and we have the Atlantic and European aspirations," Markarova said. "I believe nobody's safe if Ukraine will be attacked," the ambassador added. "We do not want to be part of the Soviet Union or the Russian Empire or the Russian Federation. We want to be sovereign, we are sovereign and we're fighting for our independence," she continued. "And if Ukraine will be further attacked by Russia, of course, they will not stop after Ukraine. So that's why it's in the interest of Europe and all democratic world, to help us to defend ourselves but also...
