How Many People Survived Noah Flood? - Onyeji Nnaji
One big mistake any writer will regrettably make is to tell a single story. The danger is that it usually leaves certain gaps that inspire people to ask questions. For instance, any good reader, reading Genesis chapter four would certainly come out with such questions as:
i) Who was Cain afraid of, if only his parents were on earth the period he killed his brother?ii) Why did God reply Cain the way He did?iii) Does it mean that there were people elsewhere?iv) Who were the occupants of Nod(o); the city Cain moved towards when he left God's presence?V) Which nation or people gave birth to "Ada", the girl who was married to Cain's grandson?
These questions do not mean that the creation story found in genesis is untrue. No; what these questions should let us understand is that Moses had just rendered one of the versions of the creation story. The only problem with Moses acount is that he traced only his linage; then, getting to Adam, he concluded that Adam was the father of the WHOLE human race. The same conclusion was also made on the Noah flood. Genesis 7:23 has another stereotyped narrative where Noah said that "every living substance was destroyed that lived upon the face of the Earth...."
We do not blame Noah here; we rather blame Moses. Moses did not seem to understand the role of "point of view" and "narrative technique." Had Moses known that there could be another point of view somewhere, he would have been suggestive in his assertions. From Noah's point of view, everything living on earth was destroyed. He said so because, he saw the water level that made his boat to sail out of Africa. But it is not true; many people survived the flood but Noah didn't know. I will show you instances of people who survived.
Igbo Fathers Survived the Flood
One irrevocable truth is that God destroyed the world of old with water. Every oral history contains this aspect of the human history. What was disputed in the east was the claim that every living thing was destroyed. In my research findings, it was uncovered that the flood only killed bad people. I did not need any struggle to believe this because, the Bible which told me this story for the first time also said that the flood wiped away bad people. To be explicit, if you examine the flood account carefully you will notice that it was purportedly designed to exterminate the descendants of Cain so that only the linage of Seth may survive through Noah.
The question I asked was, "where did they survive since the whole earth was amorous?" The answer I received was that they survived on mountains and in caves. My respondent did not find it difficult to sight an example for me. He mentioned the Ugwu-Ele in Uturu, Okigwe division. It was this reply that took me to Okigwe, after which I began to compile the detailed information about Okigwe Civilization. See image of Ugwu-Ele in Okigwe Civilization. I was also told that Mountain Cameroon was another surviving place for the flood victims.
The next question I asked was, "How did they survive?" I was particularly concerned about those that survived in caves. The reply I received was this; "You should know that those men of old were partly spirit and partly human." I felt nervous, but the proofs came to me immediatly. There were two people I have met as a child. One was my classmate in secondary school while the other was and still is Brother Magnus (as I always call him).
Tochukwu Odo was my classmate and my colleague in the Scripture Union back then in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo local government area of Enugu state. In Eha-Amufu, Tochukwu Odo is from Ihenyi. His father was Odo Egwogu. I state this clearly because one day, someone who knows the person may be in contact with this work and may wish to verify my information. Tochukwu's father was a dibia who specialized in healing sick people. Any time he had a patient whose ailment proved incurable, he normally embark on a journey to the underworlds.
Any day he was set to travel, he did it in the open; in a broad daylight when people saw him and proved that he did so. Always he was accompanied by "Ogbu Oja" (an artist specialist with metal gung) moving in front while he followed. Getting to Ebe river, he would plead with people bathing in the river to come up that he would embark on a journey. Right there, people would watch him walk into the river, then his attendant artist would return to base. Sometimes he spends a month depending on the nature of the ailment. Testimonies proved that he had never failed to heal the sick person when he returned.
Now, how this great man survived inside the water for the number of days had something to tell about the flood survival. The taught about how he survived inside the river brought me home to Brother Magnus. Magnus used to enter into Ebe river and we would watch him vanished those days when we were children. When I came home, I approached Magnus and asked him how he survived inside the river those days. Here is his reply:
The water you see is an envelope that covers the reality below from the eyes of men. When I enter the river, I move on till I get to a point where I began to walk on a tarred road. With beautiful buildings all around. There, I breath as normal as here and takes part in activities as I do here.
I do not know if Odo Egwogu is still alive because Tochukwu abandoned his education when we were in JS3 at Union Secondary school, Eha-Amufu; but Magnus is still alive and can be approached for any further research consultation. Unlike Odo who was a dibia, Magnus is a normal person with sound education. He is a graduate of Economics at the prestigious Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT). He has such a sound mind and very libral that he could grant interviews on any subject knowledgeable to him.
With all these proves, coupled with the reply that "those men of old were half human and half spirit, it is apparent that our ancestors survived the flood. Metus even notes in his book that, "it was said that in the beginning men carry spirits in them". My story here may look relatively allusive, I shall provide you with some testers; somethings you can do to justify whether my sensation is right about the flood incidents or not.
* Our Knowledge of Agriculture Gives us a Clue
If you read the whole of Genesis chapter seven, you will believe with me that Noah's conclusion about the flood is not too accurate. Moses said that Noah did an experiment with birds to know the level of the water after 11 months. According to the scripture, Noah sent two birds: a raven and a dove. The birds travelled and raven never
returned. In your churches you may have been told that the bird died. But I tell you today that the bird saw life elsewhere and couldn't return because it had travelled to a considerable distance.
Seven days later, Noah sent another dove and it came back with a leaf of an "Olive plant". That is another problem. Anybody that has a good knowledge of agriculture will agree with me that; when a particular land is waterlogged for over a month, it will take more than seven days for a new plant to sprout from such a piece of land. Again, according to botanies, it takes approximately 40 days for an Olive seed to germinate.
If you ask the question, "who planted the Olive plant?" the mission of the second dove becomes complicated. Of course, the existence of the olive plant defiled natural law on the supposed time for a land to produce plants after flood. This may be palpably settled on the belief that it was God who made it to sprout. Where otherwise, then it is apparent that the second dove had gone farther than the first dove.
* The Earth's Topographical Position Provides Another Clue
Another thing not considered by Moses is the topography of the earth. This goes a long way helping us to understand how and why, and also, where Noah's ark left during the flood. Nri tradition reveals clearly that, in the beginning every live were concentrated in the east. The reason is simple, the sun rises in the east right from the beginning of time. Adam too lived in the east, although he lived separate from the sons of God. That was why Genesis chapter six shares for us the relationship between the sons of God and the daughters of men. The sun rises from Abakaliki. It has been so from the beginning. That is why the white men countries are collectively referred to as the "WEST". The sun has two directions: the rising in the east and the setting in the west.
The reason the western worId is sitting upon the ocean is because the ark rested in the west. It does not require any water science to know that when the water level is high, it flows towads the direction where the level is lower. And, a particular level of the same water cannot be lower except the level of the land that embodies the water level at such area is lower. It is common sense; water flows through a lower region and it continues to move on as long as the land continuous to be the same way. Therefore, as the rain prevailed for days, Moses was kind enough to tell us that the ark was lifted upon the water, and it sailed. You will get this in Genesis 7:17-18.
The ark continued to move on the water because the water was moving also. It moved for ten months before it rested on mount Ararat in Anatolia, Turkey. Anatolia shows evidence of the Noah ark, mesured the same way as mentioned in the scripture. Mount Ararat is about 45 kilometers (28 mi) long and is about 30 kilometers (19 mi) long along its short axis. It consists of about 1,150km high. This height was apparently the level of the flood when Noah arrived the western land.
Now, anybody with good brain inside his skull knows that the volume of every river downstream is always higher, larger and wider compared with it's source. Therefore, it was possible that as the ark moved with the water, the volume of the flood at the set off point was decreasing rapidly. So, while the flood lasted for ten months and more in the sight of Noah, down here in the east the flood may not have lasted more than two months. You know why? My friend who is based in Turkey told me that it is only in the month, August, that Turkey observes complete 31 sunny days. The absence of sun for the whole of the months could aid the late disappearance of the flood at the place where Noah found himself. That was another advantage the east has.
In conclusion, I do believe that it is no longer allusive how Noah got to Anatolia, in Turkey. That was the genesis of human being in the western world, and, of course, the last time God made the attempt to separate the sons of God (the Blacks) from the descendants of Adam. This last meeting of both races happened in two ways. The knowledge of the fact that Noah left somewhere to get to the cold part of the earth created the desire to re-locate that place of the beginning; the same made them to move from place to place. On the other side, the Igbo, in their quest for new places went pass Egypt to the far British isles and turtle island. We founded more places within and outside Africa because, while Noah was still counting the months of the flood, life had resumed it's rightful position down here. Anatolia evidence of human presence was carbon-dated to 1000000B.C.; while evidence of Okigwe Civilizarion was carbon-dated to 1006000B.C. This estimation done by Oxford University spectronomatory mashine will tell you who survived the flood first.
