The police have arrested a 22 years old Danish suspect, police said during a press conference on Sunday evening, adding that it is too early to say what the motive is.

"We are convinced that the arrested suspect is the one who carried out the shooting at the mall," the Copenhagen police chief said in a Sunday night press conference.

Video reportedly from the scene showed crowds of shoppers running through the mall as shots were heard being periodically fired in the background. Photos from the scene showed a large presence of emergency services at the site.

"We currently do not have the opportunity to tell more about the person's identity," said police after announcing the arrest. "We are on the ground with increased forces and are working to form an overview. We will update as soon as we can."

"My deepest sympathy to all those who have lost loved ones to the injured and their relatives. And to all the Danes who have been close to the scary events. I want to strengthen the Danish people and ask them to stand together and support each other in such uncertain times," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to the horrific attack on social media Sunday night.

"Thank you to the police forces and the first responders. I would also like to extend my gratitude towards all those who stepped up to help," she added.

Police asked the public not to come to the scene and for those in the mall to shelter in place until police reach them.

"Terrible reports of shooting in Fields. We do not yet know for sure how many were injured or dead, but it is very serious," tweeted Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Sophie Hæstorp Andersen.

"#Israel stands firmly with #Denmark after the horrendous shooting attack at #Fields. Our hearts are with all Danes tonight, in the hope everyone is safe at their houses. May all the wounded recover fully and swiftly," tweeted Davy Antebi, deputy ambassador of Israel to Denmark.

Metro service in the area have been halted due to the ongoing incident.

A concert by singer Harry Styles that was supposed to take place on Sunday evening in Copenhagen near the shooting site was canceled, reported police.

"I'm heartbroken along with the people of Copenhagen...I’m devastated for the victims, their families, and everyone hurting...sorry we couldn’t be together. Please look after each other," Styles said on social media.
