US vice-president to call for reunification of Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank after war
US Vice-President Kamala Harris will lay out American objectives for when the Israel-Hamas conflict ends at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai today.
She is expected to stress that the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank should ultimately be reunified under one governing entity after the fighting ends.
The Western-backed Palestinian Authority governs parts of the occupied West Bank.
Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007 from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' mainstream Fatah party and has ruled the enclave ever since.
Ms Harris is set to meet with regional leaders including Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirates.
"In her meetings, the vice-president will outline our principles for post-conflict Gaza, lay out specific proposals that put Palestinian voices at the centre, and build regional support for our efforts," a White House official said.
Ms Harris will also express the US's desire to see a pause in the fighting restored in order to take more hostages out of Gaza and return to a steady flow of humanitarian aid.
But as our US correspondent Mark Stone said earlier (11.25pm post), the resumption of hostilities in Israel and Gaza was a blow to President Joe Biden.
