Breaking: Justice Kudirat Orders Immediate Repatriation of Nnamdi Kanu to Kenya
In a pioneering ruling, Nigeria's Chief Justice, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, ordered Nnamdi Kanu's immediate repatriation to Kenya, denouncing how he was returned to Nigeria. In an official letter to the Kenyan government, she also apologized for Nigeria's "unruly behaviour" in Kanu's extradition case.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, who recently took office as Nigeria's Chief Justice, stated unequivocally that she lacked jurisdiction to rule over Kanu's case due to the illegality of his extradition.
"Nnamdi Kanu was forced to return to Nigeria in contravention of both international and Kenyan law. On what legal basis can I pursue this case? It is a farce of justice, an insult to my profession, and a betrayal of the years of academic and legal experience I have gained," she said.
She went on to explain that Justice Binta Nyako, who had previously handled the matter, had withdrawn due to its explosive character.
"This case is a suicide mission—a ticking time bomb waiting to detonate." The entire world is watching. Any miscalculation on my part will not only harm my legacy, but will also tarnish the reputation I have created over the years. "I will not allow my children to be insulted all over the world because of how I handled this case," she said.
Justice Kekere-Ekun stressed that Kanu's situation is no longer just a Nigerian problem, but a worldwide one.
If Nigeria seeks to prosecute him, it must first submit a legal request to the country where he resides. If that country legally extradites him, we can talk. But for the time being, I wash my hands of this issue and order his immediate repatriation to Kenya, without delay or restrictions," she said.
