EMPIRE STAR JUSSIE SMOLLETT ATTACKED IN POSSIBLE HATE CRIME

Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime. Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said. According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene. Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN. Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place. FIVE DEAD, 130 MISSING AS MIGRANT BOATS SINK OFF DJIBOUTI – IOM

Five people are dead and about 130 missing off the coast of Djibouti after two boats carrying migrants capsized, the UN migration agency said on Tuesday. The incident occurred about 30 minutes after the overloaded boats set off in heavy seas from Godoria on the Horn of Africa nation’s northeast coastline, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). “After being alerted by local residents, a team of gendarmerie gathered this afternoon near the reported site of the disaster and discovered two survivors as well as the remains of three women and two men,” IOM said in a statement. One survivor estimated there were 130 people on his boat, but wasn’t able to say the number of passengers on the other vessel. “The coast guard was also alerted and launched search and rescue operations. CJN Onnoghen Denies Resigning

he Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen has denied media reports that he has resigned following his suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari. According to a statement by his media aide, Awassam Bassey, the CJN described as ‘Fake News’ all reports suggesting that he has resigned. “Mischief makers are still circulating this fake news. Once again, no truth in it whatsoever. The Hon CJN, Hon Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, has not resigned”, Awassam Bassey said. There have been several speculations regarding Justice Onnoghen case at the Code Of Conduct Bureau. President Buhari suspended Justice Onnoghen on Friday, January 25, Justice Tanko Mohammed was sworn in to serve as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria. The President’s move has since generated diverse reactions across the country and even in the international community.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, on Monday held a World Press Conference on the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Speaking at the briefing which took place in Abuja, the former Vice President described the action of the Federal Government as ‘a breach of the Constitution’. He also condemned Justice Onnoghen’s suspension and likened the decision of the government to that of military dictatorship. According to the PDP candidate, the issue at stake is not whether what Justice Onnoghen did is right or wrong but whether it is lawful for the government to act the way it did. He maintained that President Muhammadu Buhari has set a new record that was never recorded even during the dark days of the military. Mohammed was sworn in as the acting CJN last Friday, after President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Walter Onnoghen as CJN. Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), on Monday presided over a five-man panel at the resumed sitting of the Supreme Court in Abuja. Mohammed was sworn in as the acting CJN on Friday, after President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Walter Onnoghen as CJN. Other members of the panel are Justice Amiru Sanusi, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Justice Mary Peter-Odili and Justice Paul Galinje. On the Supreme Court website, though, Onnoghen is still pictured as the CJN. On the website, 10 cases, including a case involving the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), are listed for hearing on Monday at the Supreme Court.
