NEWSUS Embassy to close Abuja, Lagos offices, gives reason

The US embassy in Nigeria has announced that its offices in Abuja and Lagos would be closed on Monday in honour of Labour Day celebrated in the US. Labour Day is celebrated in the US on the first Monday of September. The embassy announced this in a tweet on Friday. The embassy noted that consular services would not be available on Monday. The tweet read: “HOLIDAY CLOSURE: The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2019 to commemorate Labor Day. “No consular services will be available on this date. #HappyLaborDay to all those celebrating.” The embassy had also insisted in a statement that its reciprocity fees for Nigerians applying for tourism, student and business visas would remain for now.

Buhari group makes allegations against Atiku, PDP ahead of tribunal ruling

The Buhari Media Organisation says the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, have hatched a plot to smear the character of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Mohammed, ahead of the September 13 judgement of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal. It alleged that this was the outcome of a recent strategy meeting of PDP leaders and the former Vice President in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The BMO said in a statement on Friday by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, that it had credible information that Abubakar and the PDP, fearing near-certain loss at the Tribunal, were preparing the ground for an appeal at the Supreme Court. The group said one of their strategies for a favourable outcome at the Supreme Court is to force the CJN to recuse himself from the Supreme Court panel to hear the appeal. Nigeria’s Flying Eagles settled for Silver medal after they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the men’s football event at the 12th All Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco, reports Completesports.com . The Paul Aigbogun’s charges conceded twice in the first half of the encounter played at the Stade Moulay Hassan. Despite spirited efforts to find their way back into the game, the Flying Eagles were unable to breach the Burkina Faso defence in the second half. Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the group stage, but Burkina Faso proved their superiority over the Flying Eagles this time around. Nigeria last won an All Africa Gold medal in the 1973 edition.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has given his thoughts on Tammy Abraham's omission from Gareth Southgate's recently released squad list. Despite scoring two goals against Norwich last weekend, the 21-year-old centre-forward didn't make England's list for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kosovo and Bulgaria. Reacting to the player's snub, Lampard believes the intense competition for place in Southgate's attacking frontline is the main reason for Abraham's omission. Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident: 6 Killed, 24 Other Casualties Rescued

A Mazda bus travelling from Lagos overtook and collided with the Toyota bus travelling on the opposite direction of the road. At least six persons were killed in a head-on collision between two commercial buses at Ogere on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. About 24 persons, including two children were injured in the crash. The crash occurred on Friday. The auto crash involving a white Toyota bus with registration number ABC 932 XJ and a Mazda bus, FST 820 XD, was caused by speeding and dangerous overtaking. A Mazda bus travelling from Lagos overtook and collided with the Toyota bus travelling on the opposite direction of the road. The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Clement Oladele, said the crash occurred around 8.30 am. He said the crash could have been avoided if motorists had strictly adhered to construction speed of maximum of 50 kilometers per hour and refrained from overtaking around construction zones.
