Court nullifies declaration of IPOB as terrorist group, awards N8bn damages to Nnamdi Kanu

A state high court sitting in Enugu has nullified the 2017 proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation . Anthony Onovo, the presiding judge, on Thursday ruled that the proscription of IPOB is a violation of the fundamental human rights of Nnamdi Kanu, the group’s leader. BACKGROUND In September 2017, the defence headquarters  branded  IPOB, a “militant terrorist organisation. On September 20, 2017, a federal high court in Abuja  declared  the activities of IPOB as “acts of terrorism”. Today, I led a team of lawyers to a landmark victory before the High Court of Enugu State in SUIT NO: E/20/2023 filed in January 2023 against the Southeast Governors’ Forum and the FG (Respondents) for their collective executive actions (in 2017) that led to the proscription of IPOB and declaring it a terrorist group in contravention of Section 42 of the Constitution which prohibits discrimination on the basis of ethnicity. Advertisement According to reports at least 16 people are dead while 50-60 others are said to be injured. On Wednesday evening, the Maine State Police Department sent a warning to people living in Maine’s second largest city to stay inside in response to an active shooter Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office posted on their social media platforms notifying the public that authorities in Maine are investigating two active shooter events. “We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate,” the sheriff’s office said. The city of Lewiston has issued a shelter-in-place. “Please stay off the streets and allow law enforcement to diffuse the situation.
